Canada Day, originally known as Dominion Day, commemorates the joining of the British North American provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and the Province of Canada (which later split into Ontario and Quebec) into a single nation under the British Empire on July 1, 1867. This historic event, known as Confederation, was formalized with the passing of the Constitution Act, 1867. In 1982, with the patriation of the Canadian Constitution, July 1 was officially renamed Canada Day.
